The human brain has evolved over millions of years to become a vast network of billions of neurons and synaptic connections. Understanding it is one of humankind's greatest pursuits. But to understand how the brain processes information, researchers must first understand the very basics of neurons -- even down to how proteins inside the neurons act to change the neuron's voltage. To do so requires a balance of experimentation and computer modeling. Czytaj więcej »

MATTHEW BARAKAT The Associated Press ADELPHI, Md. - That night, he was returning home from the International Spy Museum, of all places. He had been meeting with, of all people, an old friend who once was a top officer in the KGB. It was raining when Paul Joyal pulled into his driveway in this suburb 10 miles from the White House. "I got some big plays behind me," McCutchen said with Milledge sitting at the next cubicle in the visitors' clubhouse. "They gave me a chance." Pittsburgh was leading 3-0 when Paul Janish led off the sixth inning with a double for the Reds. Joey Votto hit a sinking line drive to left field that...

The Associated Press AUSTIN, Texas - A handyman accused of killing six people in a cross-country spree was convicted Friday in two of the deaths, and could face the death penalty. Paul Devoe, 46, was accused of killing five people in Texas and one in Pennsylvania in August 2007. The jury deliberated for less than 30 minutes before finding him guilty of capital murder in the deaths of two teenage girls. The girls' family members, who were holding hands before the verdict was read, cried, smiled and nodded when the verdict was announced. Prosecutors say Devoe fatally shot 41-year-old Michael Allred at the bar he worked at in Marble Falls, then drove to the home of his ex-girlfriend, Paula...
