Three islands in the U.S. commonwealth - Saipan, Tinian and Agrihan - were under a typhoon warning, while a typhoon watch for Rota was downgraded to a tropical storm warning, the National Weather Service said. Marek Edelman, the last surviving leader of the ill-fated 1943 Warsaw ghetto revolt against the Nazis, died yesterday at the age of 90. Mr. Edelman died of old age at the family home of his friend Paula Sawicka, where he had lived for the past two years. "He died at home, among friends, among his close people," Ms. Sawicka told The Associated Press. Most of Mr. Edelman's adult life was dedicated to the defense of human life, dignity and freedom. He fought the Nazis in the doomed Warsaw ghetto revolt and later in the Warsaw city uprising. And then for decades he fought communism in Poland. The Associated Press LONE PINE, Calif. - Earthquakes up to magnitude 5.2 struck Friday evening in a remote area of eastern California that was been shaken by a sequence of temblors a day earlier. Inyo County sheriff's dispatcher Carol Drew said no damage or injuries were reported, but the department received several calls about the quakes. The quakes' epicenters were just southeast of the town of Lone Pine in the arid Owens Valley below the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada, about 180 miles north of Los Angeles.
